Raging Waters
Reminder: Friday is our field trip to Raging Waters to celebrate the end of the school year. Please remember to bring a swimsuit, rash guard, beach towel, lots of sunscreen, and a sack lunch. A dry change of clothes for the ride home is a great idea as well. We will most likely be getting back to Rio del Mar around 5:00 pm so be sure to make pick up arrangments.

Smarter Balanced CAASPP Testing
We did practice testing today. I had three students absent today, so I've decided to start testing tomorrow. Students should be well rested and have eaten a healthy breakfast to help them be as focused and comfortable as possible during testing.
Please do your very best to ensure that your son/daughter is present every day for these next two weeks.

Jr. High Field Trip is Cancelled / Volunteer Appreciation
Thursday's Field Trip is CANCELED.
We are canceling the field trip on Thursday because they have canceled the campus tour and the class visitations due to SBAC Testing. These are the best parts of the field trip, so it doesn't make any sense to go now. We've already received all the information we need from Mr. Moran's visit to our school and the 8th-grade presentations. It would be redundant at this point to listen to another speech in the gymnasium for and hour.
Volunteer Appreciation:
We are blessed at Rio to have so many wonderful volunteers serve our school throughout the year. I am so very thankful for all who have helped make this school year one of my best ever. Please join us Friday morning during drop-off for coffee and treats as a small token of our appreciation. We will also be honoring those 6th-grade volunteers who are serving for their final year at Rio at our all-school assembly from 8:00 am to 8:30 am.

AJHS Accelerated Placement Test
The writing test for accelerated placement will be offered this Tuesday at 3:30 at the Jr. High. Some students received an invitation letter that said the test would be at 2:00 on Tuesday. THAT IS INCORRECT. IT IS AT 3:30. If you can't make it this Tuesday, then it will also be offered on Wednesday, May 3rd at 2:00.

Field Trip Friday
Our field trip to the Egyptian Museum is this Friday. I'll be contacting parent chaperones about driving Friday. I'm planning on leaving school by 8:00 because our tour starts at 9:00, and with traffic I want to make sure we get there early or at least on time.
Students should bring a sack lunch that day. We will leave them in the chaperone cars. After our tour we will walk over the Rose Gardens to eat lunch (it's only a few blocks away from the museum).
My goal is to make it back to school by 1:00.

Tomorrow is Pi Day!

End of 2nd Trimester
The Second Trimester ended on Wednesday. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 17th. As a reminder the report cards have changed in 6th grade. They will look very different and in many ways, way scaled down and basic. This may be alarming at first, but it is to prepare students for the type of report cards they will receive in Jr. High and High School, where students receive a letter grade for each subject/class.
Students will receive one overall grade for the following Subjects:
Math
Reading
Writing (Language and Speech grades have been calculated into the overall reading grade)
Social Studies
Science
Art
P.E.
Citizenship
There should be no surprises for students and parents if they've been checking grades online at iGradePlus on a consistent basis. I remind students weekly to be checking their grades online and missing assignments, however most students do not take advantage of this.
Again, Report Cards go home March 17th.

Kinder Pics Needed
3/6/17
Hello 6TH GRADE PARENTS,
It’s not too late to submit pictures of your 6th graders for the promotion slideshow 2017!
We prefer GROUP pictures of the sixth graders of when they were in kinder. If your child did not attend Rio Del Mar Elementary, then a kinder picture from their school will do. Pictures can be from birthday parties, field trips, sporting events or school activities. We need lots of group pictures so the more the merrier. Please try to find some time to go through your pictures and send them in ASAP! We want to include ALL of our 6th graders in the slideshow.
Please bring jpeg pictures in using a flash drive with GROUP Kinder Pictures!
Another option is that you can simply upload them to: https://6thgradeslideshow20162017.shutterfly.com/
We need these pictures no LATER than April 1,2017. If you have any questions, please contact your 6th teacher.
The sooner we get these pictures, the sooner we can begin working on finishing the slideshow.
Thank you!!!
Mr. Kyle, Ms. Birchall, and Mr. Avey

Rosicrucian Museum
We have a field trip planned for Friday, April 21st to the Rosicrucian Ancient Egyptian Museum in San Jose. I'll be looking for 9 chaperones to join us on the field trip. Chaperones will need to have all the info on file with the school office though. That means fingerprints and proof of TB Test, thus the early announcement of this trip.
The cost is $13.00 per person. I can only ask for donations toward the cost of this field trip, so if you are able to cover the cost of the ticket then please send in cash or make a check out to RDMPA for $13.00.

Here's a blurb about our upcoming Math Festival:
Hi parents,
The Rio del Mar Math Festival is coming up and we are in need of parent volunteers! Here are the details:
Tuesday, February 21st
Two possible volunteer sessions:
7:55 - 10:35 OR 11:35 - 2:10
Volunteers will be assisting with classes, grade K-6th, as they filter through the MPR to explore math activities and games.
You do not need to teach any math or know the skills, you will be more of a facilitator at a center - cleaning up materials between each class, helping younger students read the directions, etc.
If you are interested and can commit to one of the above times, please email alyssa_davis@pvusd.net
with your name, child's name, child's teacher, your email address, and your preferred volunteer time (7:55 - 10:35 or 11:35 - 2:10)
Thank you!

Happy New Year!
Welcome Back! I hope you all had a restful and fun break. I bet many of you are actually eager to get back into school mode, except for the waking up early 😊. So here we go...science fair, finish informational textbooks, and start the new argument writing unit...there's lots to do. Don't worry, we'll ease into it. See you all Wednesday (short day).
